Sprouts and Saplings Recital Series

As part of a generous grant from the American Savings Foundation for NBSO Youth Initiatives––Building for the Future––we are able to institute a Young Person's Recital Series; the New Britain Symphony Orchestra Sprouts and Saplings Recital Program at Trinity-On-Main to showcase young instrumentalists who study with members of the NBSO.

Come see our future orchestra members and concertgoers perform on Sunday April 11 at 2:30 and Sunday April 25 at 2:30 at Trinity-on-Main.

Education

Young People’s Concert

The NBSO’s Young People’s Concert is held annually for fifth grade students from the towns of New Britain, Plainville, and Berlin. About 1,700 students are brought from their schools by buses to Welte Hall on the campus of Central Connecticut State University to hear the hour-long concert.

For the students, the Young People’s Concert gives the opportunity to hear music performed by a live symphony orchestra of professional musicians.  The classroom and music teachers prepare the students   in advance for the concert with the assistance of an educational bookletprepared by the NBSO. The booklet contains information about the composers and the music and suggests some preparatory activities.

In advance of the concert, there is also an essay contest and a poster contest.  The winners are announced at the concert and presented with their awards on stage.  Also featured at the concert is the selection of one student from the audience who conducts the orchestra with the help of the conductor.

The NBSO gratefully acknowledges the support of the following funders of the 2009 Young People’s Concert:  Elizabeth Carse Foundation, Bank of America, Trustee; The New Britain Day Nursery; The New Britain Lions Club; The Marjorie Moore Charitable Foundation, Bank of America, Trustee; The Rotary Club of New Britain-Berlin; and the Robert C. Vance Charitable Foundation.
